Making Yoga Make SENSE
Indriya Yoga - Yoga For the Five Senses
The Journey Within
Understand what shapes the way you experience and respond to the world.
A brand-new yoga framework built around the five senses.
Created for complete beginners, curious practitioners and experienced yoga teachers.
No previous knowledge of yoga, philosophy, or Sanskrit is needed.
Bringing together yoga philosophy, mythology, the nervous system, memory, reflection and practical tools to help you explore:
Why am I the way I am?
What shapes the way I experience and respond to the world?
And if I want more choice, how can I use what I discover?

We’re often told we can choose how we respond.
But can we always?
We’re told there is a space between what happens and our response—
and that within that space lies our freedom to choose.
But I kept wondering:
What shapes the response before we ever reach the choice?
Sometimes there is a pause.
Sometimes there isn’t.
Sometimes anger, fear, worry, excitement or overwhelm arrives before we have consciously chosen anything at all.
And sometimes the response makes perfect sense.
Perhaps you are standing on the battlefield of Fairness.
Perhaps your Belonging has been challenged.
Perhaps a Boundary has been crossed.
Perhaps your Voice has been ignored.
And sometimes the battlefield in front of you is not the only one your system is responding to.
Something happening now may have touched something learned much earlier.
That doesn’t make the response wrong.
It makes it worth understanding.
So before we ask:
“How do I change this?”
We begin by asking:
What am I defending?
What am I responding to?
Why does this matter to me?
That is where The Journey Within begins.
Not with fixing.
Not with calming.
But with understanding the battlefield you are standing on.
And then—only then—asking:
Do I want another option?
If the answer is no, there may be nothing to change.
If the answer is yes, that is where the tools begin.
Understand the battlefield.
Recognise the pause.
Choose what comes next—if you want to.
How The Journey Within Works
Listen. Reflect. Embody.
The Journey Within moves through a repeating triad drawn from the ancient process of learning.
It is not a ladder to climb or a sequence to complete.
It is a living loop you can return to whenever something asks to be understood.
ŚRAVAṆA — LISTEN
First, we listen and learn.
Explore the senses, nervous system, memory, mythology and yoga philosophy—and begin to notice what may be shaping the way you experience the world.
This is where the battlefield begins to make sense.
MANANA — REFLECT
Then, the framework turns towards you.
Recognise what has landed, consider which battlefields keep appearing and ask what belongs to now—and what may have been learned much earlier.
Recognition without judgement.
NIDIDHYĀSANA — EMBODY
Then, take what you have discovered into real life.
Build your own toolkit from practices, reflections and sensory choices that work for you, when you need them.
The decision remains yours.
Listen. Reflect. Embody.
Play. Pause. Do. Repeat.
Every experience begins with a sense.
Before you decide what something means, remember it, respond to it or choose what happens next, the world has already reached you somehow.
Something you see.
Something you hear.
Something you feel.
A taste.
A smell.
In The Journey Within, those five senses become your Five Soldiers:
THE WATCHER — SIGHT
THE LISTENER — HEARING
THE BOUNDARY KEEPER — TOUCH
THE GATEKEEPER — TASTE
THE MEMORY KEEPER — SMELL
They are more than ways of experiencing the world.
They are your frontline.
They are the first to meet the battlefield.
Your Five Soldiers are uniquely yours.
Your Watcher will not necessarily notice what mine notices. Your Listener may hear something completely differently. Your Boundary Keeper, Gatekeeper and Memory Keeper carry their own associations, preferences and histories too.
As you move through The Journey Within, you begin to recognise:
What catches their attention?
What sends them to the frontline?
What feels familiar?
What begins to feel like too much?
What supports them when they need it?
Because your yoga should not have to look like anybody else’s.
You will use what you discover to build practices and support around your own sensory world.
Not mine.
Not somebody else’s idea of what should work for you.
Your Soldiers.
Your battlefield.
Your practice.
The battlefield is not somewhere else.
The Bhagavad Gītā begins on a battlefield.
The Journey Within begins there too—but brings the battlefield into ordinary life.
From the Gītā to Tesco, our battlefields appear in conversations, relationships, workplaces, family life and the moments that seem small but somehow land heavily.
Sometimes what has happened touches something fundamental:
EXISTENCE
May I be here?
BELONGING
Is there room for me?
FAIRNESS
Is this just?
BOUNDARY
Where do I end and you begin?
VOICE
Can I speak and be heard?
MEANING
How does this fit within the world I understand?
These are the six chakra battlefields explored within The Journey Within.
Not seven coloured problems to diagnose.
Not a hierarchy to climb.
Not evidence that you are blocked, balanced, broken or more evolved than somebody else.
Instead, the chakras become lenses—different ways of recognising where an experience has landed and why it might matter.
The same event may touch Belonging for one person, Fairness for another and Boundary for somebody else.
And when something important appears to be challenged, your response has context.
So rather than immediately asking:
“What is wrong with me?”
We can begin somewhere else:
Which battlefield am I standing on?
What is being defended?
And do I want another choice?
Welcome to the Practice Library
Included inside The Journey Within—and available from the moment you join.
This is where understanding becomes something you can use.
The course helps you recognise your Five Soldiers, the battlefields you encounter and what may be asking for your attention.
The Practice Library gives you ways to respond.
Inside, you will find:
FRONTLINE TOOLS
Short practices for real life—including one-minute interventions and five-minute resets for moments when time, space or patience is limited.
R&R FOR YOUR FIVE SOLDIERS
Longer practices created around the Watcher, Listener, Boundary Keeper, Gatekeeper and Memory Keeper—helping you explore what supports each of your senses.
MOVEMENT & INDRIYA NAMASKĀRS
Complete movement practices, shorter building blocks and Jackie’s original Indriya Namaskārs—created to honour and work with the five senses.
MEDITATION, REST & RESTORATIVE PRACTICE
Longer sensory meditations, restorative practices, yoga nidrā, guided rest and practices that can stand alone or become part of something larger.
BREATH, SOUND, MANTRA & MUDRĀ
Prāṇāyāma, humming, mantra, singing bowls and mudrā practices—offering different ways to work with attention, breath and sensory experience.
PRACTICE FOR ORDINARY LIFE
Morning and evening practices, bedside and desk-based tools, sensory pauses and simple ways to bring the work into the moments where life actually happens.
THE SENSORY KITCHEN
Recipes, drinks, oils, fragrances and sensory ideas exploring Āhāra—what you invite into your world through all five senses.
JOURNAL, REFLECTION & THE EVENING DEBRIEF
Guided reflection runs throughout The Journey Within, giving you somewhere to pause and notice how the framework meets your own life.
You will receive a comprehensive 72-page Chakra Journal, the Archivist’s Library, reflection prompts throughout the modules and a reusable Evening Debrief for noticing your FFS level, which Soldiers needed attention, whether any swords were lifted and what supported you.
Write every day.
Return occasionally.
Answer one question.
Fill pages.
Leave pages blank.
This is reflection—not compulsory homework.
Choose. Don’t complete.
The Practice Library is not another programme you have to finish.
You do not need to use every tool.
You do not need to practise in the same way as anybody else.
Some days you may need one minute.
Some days you may want a complete practice.
Some days you may discover that doing nothing is the right choice.
Use what you have learned to choose what supports your Soldiers, on your battlefield, in your life.
Your practice does not have to look like anybody else’s.
It only needs to belong to you.
The Practice Library is included with lifetime access and is designed as a living collection, with new practices added over time.
You do not need to be a yoga teacher to take this course.
The Journey Within is not a teacher-training course.
It has been designed from the ground up for anyone who wants to understand more about how they experience and respond to the world.
You do not need to be flexible.
You do not need an established yoga practice.
You do not need to know the Bhagavad Gītā, understand Sanskrit or have studied the nervous system.
Everything is introduced carefully, in accessible language, from the very beginning.
If you are completely new to yoga, you can begin here.
If you have practised for years, you may discover an entirely new way of understanding it.
And if you are a yoga teacher, there is an additional professional layer waiting for you.
Are you a yoga teacher?
The course includes dedicated resources to support your continuing professional development.
For Yoga Teachers
The course I wish I had when I began teaching.
If you have recently completed a 200-hour teacher training, The Journey Within offers an opportunity to explore ideas that have taken me more than twenty years of teaching, study and practice to bring together.
If you have been teaching for years but feel ready for something fresh, it offers an original framework that can add depth, creativity and greater understanding to the way you already teach.
This is not another collection of themes to place around a sequence.
It is a way of exploring how movement, breath, sound, language, attention and the five senses may be experienced differently by every person in the room.
Stop teaching yoga.
Start teaching people.
FIVE COMPREHENSIVE TEACHER COMPANIONS
Dedicated Teacher Companions accompany Modules 1–5, covering the taught foundations of the framework—from the Battlefield and Five Soldiers through to Āhāra.
They are designed to help you learn the framework while beginning to consider how elements of it might inform your teaching.
The companions include:
Teaching considerations and professional reflection
Ways to introduce key concepts clearly
Class-planning ideas
People-aware language
Questions for personal and professional enquiry
Suggestions for exploring the material within different teaching contexts
REFLECTION BEFORE TEACHING
Modules 6–8 move into the six-battlefield chakra model, Pratyāhāra and integration.
These modules deliberately turn towards personal recognition, reflection and embodiment. They do not include Teacher Companions.
The six-battlefield chakra model is new, original work. Within this course, teachers are invited to experience and understand it—not to treat it as a ready-made system to begin teaching immediately.
Because some work deserves to be lived with before it is passed on.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE HANDOUTS
Within the Practice Library, many of the original practices are accompanied by detailed professional handouts.
These include Jackie’s original Indriya Namaskārs, sensory practices, movement, breath, sound, mantra, mudrā and other practical tools.
Teachers can study and practise these resources before thoughtfully introducing permitted practices into their own classes, with appropriate acknowledgement of their source.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Journey Within is registered with YTT for 25 hours of Continuing Professional Development.
A dedicated CPD Record and Reflective Log helps you document:
Lessons and practices completed
Time spent studying, practising and reflecting
How the course has influenced your teaching
Practices or ideas explored with students
Your developing understanding of the framework
Areas you would like to study further
You will also receive an extensive bibliography and Reference Library containing the principal texts and sources that informed the course, providing a clear route into further study.
CERTIFICATION
Your certificate is issued automatically when you:
Complete the course
Complete the final assessment
Achieve a score of at least 80%
You can retain your certificate and completed reflective record as evidence of your professional development.
Newly qualified or decades into teaching—
there is always more to notice.
Eighteen months to build.
More than twenty years to understand.
Hello, I’m Jackie Quayle.
I have been teaching yoga for more than 23 years and have accumulated over 10,000 hours of teaching experience.
During that time, I have taught complete beginners, experienced practitioners, yoga teachers and people living with an enormous range of bodies, histories, health conditions, injuries and life experiences.
I have trained with the British Wheel of Yoga, achieved Yoga Elder status and owned and run three yoga studios—including the Yoga Bank, built inside a former bank vault.
My studies have taken me deeply into yoga philosophy, history and mythology, as well as anatomy, neuroscience and psychology.
But The Journey Within did not begin with a list of qualifications.
It began with what I kept noticing in real rooms, with real people.
The same instruction did not land in the same way for everybody.
A sound that helped one person concentrate made it impossible for somebody else to think.
A scent that carried comfort for one person held a completely different memory for another.
A touch, a word, a movement or a moment of silence could be reassuring, irritating, distracting, moving—or simply wrong for the person receiving it.
The practice was never arriving in an empty room.
Every person brought their senses, memories, preferences, associations, boundaries and lived experience with them.
And yet yoga was so often taught as though everyone in the room was receiving the same practice.
I knew there had to be another way.
So I returned to yoga’s ancient teachings on the senses, attention, experience, discernment and freedom—and began bringing them into conversation with what I had learned through decades of teaching and further study.
I did not want to strip the philosophy away until nothing meaningful remained.
I did not want to bury complete beginners beneath Sanskrit and academic language.
And I did not want to make scientific claims that the evidence could not support.
I wanted to create something substantial enough for experienced teachers, but clear enough for somebody meeting yoga for the very first time.
That became Indriya Yoga—Yoga for the Five Senses.
And it became The Journey Within.
Because yoga should not ask you to become somebody else.
It should help you understand the person who is already here.
